Him For Her

Darling what a day, digging up the dead,
The treasures they’ve left behind.
Is this where we will end,
ashes burnt and scattered beside the shed.
Skeletons of beds they slept in and the hair products she used to wear,
Unearthing what remains.
Tangled in the ivy that’s been growing through the intervening years
And as the evening clears into
Sunshine, can I describe that hazy light or must I see it again?
Signatures scrawled on the wooden walls,
Theresa was here.
Confession of love, him 4 her, with teenage abandon.
Even now all of the dust has settled
And the musty smell has left the sofa arms, visions still remain,
Kneeling low with fingers muddy,
nails grubby from the hard work of a long day, spent with
A thirst, sunburst, the turning of the earth and
2 quick pumping lungs. Spent with
A thirst, sunburst, the turning of the earth and
2 quick pumping lungs.
Sunshine, can I describe?
Darling there you stand,
beautiful in the lengthening shadows.
A head full of plans,
heart light and pounding away, as always.

The nettles looked nice today,
I found them growing in the shade,
Of an old and upright blossom tree,
And as the wind stirred through the leaves,
The nettles were softly covered.
The road looked nice today,
After heavy summer rain,
The tarmac shone like polished stone,
And as the cars sped to and fro,
Their brake lights glowed like rubies.
But some days the nettles sting your fingers
And some days the cars are too loud.
Some days the violence of the morning
Lands heavy upon your brow,
But who knows which today will be?
The fence looked nice today,
As every gap was draped with spiders webs all glistening,
And as the sun broke through the mist, the barbed wire gleamed like diamonds.
But some days the fences feel like prisons,
And some days the wire rips your skin.
Some days the trials placed before us
Make it hardly worth bothering.
But who knows which today will be?
Yeah who knows which, just wait and see.
The nettles looked nice today.
The road looked nice today.
The fence looked nice today.

Sing another borrowed tune,
Sing it in your empty room,
Sing it way out of key,
Sing it any way you please.
Sing it right through the night,
Sing it when your chains seem tight,
Sing it if you’ve lost your fight
And sing it in the morning light.
Sing it out of your despair,
Sing it if there’s no one there.
When you lose the thing you love the most
Sing your little song of hope.
Sing another cliched line,
Sing all your obvious rhymes,
Sing it when your drunken blind,
Yeah sing it way out of time.
Sing it when your faith’s run out,
Sing it when you’re racked with doubt
Sing it when the world seems strange,
Sing it if you long for change.
Sing it for the empty kiss,
Sing it for the days you’ve missed,
When everything is ash and smoke,
Sing your little song of hope.
Sing it when you’re full of rage,
Sing it the your courage fails,
If all that you can feel is pain,
Sing it once again the same.
Sing it when you’ve lost your trust,
Sing it when you’ve had enough,
Sing it when they system’s fucked,
Yeah sing it when you're giving up.
Sing it when the odds are stacked,
Sing it when your life just drags,
When you don't know if you’ll stay afloat,
Sing your little song of hope.
